Theatrical Experience

Design Statement

The costumes in Silent Sky were envisioned as vibrant reflections of discovery and perseverance, capturing the spirit of the early 20th century. My design process involved the use of available resources pulling from stock, purchasing, and constructing select pieces. Historical accuracy guided the sourcing of vintage garments and the selection of fabrics like wool, silk, taffeta, velvet, and lace to reflect the period's silhouettes and details. Each costume embodied the heart and drive of Henrietta Leavitt and her colleagues, blending authenticity with emotional storytelling. A key feature included Henrietta's glow-in-the-dark costume which was revealed as a surprise at the end of the play. This luminous design symbolized her strong research and contributions to astronomy. The overall design aesthetic encouraged viewers to feel as though they were gazing at the stars alongside her, deepening their emotional connection to the play. Through these design choices, the characters' growth was illustrated, and the play's themes of ambition and wonder were brought to life culminating in a final glowing moment where dreams and discoveries illuminated the darkness.
